Pumpkin Spice: Yea or Nay?

pumpkin spice latte in a latte on a tableIt’s that time of year again. Pumpkin spice everything is everywhere — from lattes; to Oreos; to lotion.
We asked our team of editors, designers, and writers their thoughts, and they didn’t disappoint! It turns out that 40% said “no hecking way” to pumpkin spice.

Here’s what some had to add:

  • “I was at a coffee shop one October afternoon when they ran out of pumpkin spice syrup. Things got pretty ugly.”
  • “I heart pumpkin! Pumpkin pie, pumpkins muffins, pumpkin bread, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin ice cream (!), pumpkin squares’ pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin beer…But pumpkin spice? Bleh.”
  • “Pumpkin spice is a blight upon us. While it’s not my preference, I can understand why some might enjoy spice-flavored coffee or cookies, perhaps. But talk about mission creep. Why on earth would I want to eat a pumpkin spice-flavored English muffin? Or, even worse, pumpkin-spice flavored popcorn? Yes, that exists. I saw it yesterday at the grocery store and am now 100% convinced we are living in the end times.”
  • “Less a fan of the spice than the actual gourd. Everything is better with pumpkin in it. Pumpkin butter, pumpkin cinnamon rolls, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin scones, pumpkin bread…I will happily glow a little orange this time of year.”
  • “First of all, what even is ‘pumpkin spice’? Spice that tastes like pumpkin? Pumpkin plus the spices you put in pumpkin pie? If it’s the latter, ‘pumpkin spice lattes’ might be more aptly named ‘pumpkin pie lattes’. “

Not a fan of pumpkin spice yourself? Our team has a few suggestions.

  • “The 2016 American Copy Editors Society conference in Portland, Oregon, introduced me to Stumptown Coffee; if you spot their beans in your local coffeehouse, give one of their Ethiopian varieties a try.”
  • “Favorite drink is Triple Grande Latte w/Coconut milk.”
  • “I like the idea of pumpkin spice, but the execution is always too sweet, so I end up disappointed. My favorite drink is plain black coffee, so maybe I’m just boring.”

What are your opinions on the most controversial drink of the year?
