The Power of Connection in Communications

Communication professionals who focus on authentic connection across channels see better results than those who chase the latest technology without a strategy.

This was a common sentiment shared in Vancouver, Canada, at the IABC World Conference 2025. From June 8-11, the Dragonfly Editorial team joined over 800 communications professionals from around the globe for nearly four days of learning, networking, and collaboration. And what we heard in the halls and sessions reinforced the conference theme of “Connect.”

Technology evolves, human understanding remains

Technology evolves. It wasn’t so long ago that we used calculators, sent faxes, printed directions, and used actual dictionaries to look up the meanings of words. Conference sessions reinforced that while our tools change, the fundamentals of effective communication stay the same: Know your audience, measure what matters, and protect the human intent behind every message.

In the spotlight session with Neil Hoyne, Google’s chief strategist, he drove these points home by focusing on how we use data. He encouraged attendees to introduce anecdotes to shift audience beliefs and match language with intention.

He also explained that data is a compass, not a commander. Successful data-driven companies are framing their outcomes as hypotheses and using their intuition to establish a path to expert performance. They avoid using incorrect data to reach conclusions and aren’t drowning in data they’ll never use. Hoyne encouraged attendees to remember that inconsistencies are common, disagreements are normal, and progress can still happen.

Other sessions focused on working across generational divides and the role of communicators as guardians of meaning in an AI-driven world. There was a clear message that successful teams focus on what they can learn from one another rather than fixating on differences. And as AI tools become more sophisticated, we are responsible for maintaining integrity, empathy, and authentic human connection in our work.

Finding purpose, confidence, and balance

In a new format for IABC, Dragonfly’s very own writing manager, Emily Primeaux, joined Megan Billnoske, president and CEO at IMSPIRE, and Kelsey Buckholtz, director of communication strategy at Local Wisdom, to deliver three, 10-minute TED Talk-style presentations that dove into the challenges we face on the path to self-improvement in our careers.

Megan kicked off the session with a focus on finding your purpose in your career. She emphasized how our purpose becomes the quiet voice reminding us to keep moving forward when life or career challenges bring us to our knees.

Emily stepped up next to deliver concrete networking tools to build confidence. Professional networking is key to building influence, but it isn’t necessarily easy nor does it come naturally to everyone. Her biggest takeaway? If you show up, decenter yourself in the conversation, and remain curious and authentic, you’re well on your way to making meaningful connections.

And finally, Kelsey shared her own personal story of hitting critical burnout levels and what the experience taught her: While “balance” can feel like an impossible goal, you can prevent it by establishing boundaries that protect your values.

Conference learnings and connections that last

Conference conversations revealed familiar struggles: changes to the media landscape, disengaged workforces, technological concerns, and heavy workloads. But they also highlighted hope: innovative AI use, new engagement formats, a renewed focus on authenticity, and the realization that communication is the glue that connects people, projects, missions, and values.

Audiences are becoming more adept at detecting inauthentic communication. Whether dealing with AI-generated content or traditional messaging, human touch conveys understanding — and empathy is irreplaceable. The most successful professionals understand that effective communication requires both technological fluency and deep human insight.
